Public Exhibitions proudly presents Georgia Horgan’s first London solo exhibition, All Whores are Jacobites.
Georgia’s work explores feminist ideas around language, history, learning and representation. She is interested in how history is formulated through narrative: how we talk, teach and learn, and how society reproduces and considers itself. Previous work has moved across historical moments, from medieval mystic cults, to Early Modern witch trials, through to modern day women’s organising. This method aims to extend the Marxist contention that by revealing the structural conditions for the existence of capitalist society, it is possible to read the past as something that survives in to the present.
Primarily presented as a performative lecture, this exhibition will discuss the stories of radical women from three different times, over a period of six hundred years. The lecture will be held on the opening evening, and the film element will be shown for the duration of the exhibition. Site-specific to the locale of Public Exhibitions, the characters were all at some point residents of what is now the Borough of Tower Hamlets, in the east of London - Medieval embroiderer and sex worker Eleanor Rykener; notorious brothel owner and Civil War republican Elizabeth Creswell; and Sarah Wesker, a Jewish radical and garment trade unionist.
The lecture is underscored by ideas of gendered labour, precarity and resistance articulated within the capitalist structure par excellence the global textile industry. The construction of historical fact is also an important connection that runs through the three stories; all the women were at some point (albeit allegedly in Eleanor’s case) dramatized or caricatured. Experimenting with non-linear, transhistorical narrative forms, the work aims to question conventions of prescribed or authentic histories.
Georgia Horgan (b. 1991) is an artist based in Glasgow. Recent exhibitions and projects include a two-person exhibition with Clunie Reid at Celine, Glasgow, 2016; Saturday, Glasgow International 2016; Neo-Pagan-Bitch-Witch!, Evelyn Yard, London, 2016; and Machine Room, Collective, Edinburgh, 2015. In January 2017 Georgia presented a performance at the ICA as part of Witchy Methodologies, an event organised by Anna Bunting-Branch with Holly Pester, Candice Lin, Patrick Staff, Linda Stupart and Travis Alabanza.
